Isabela City, Basilan — The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Basilan recently conducted a large-scale flood preparedness and evacuation drill in several coastal barangays as part of its continuing efforts to strengthen disaster readiness across vulnerable communities.
The simulation exercise involved rescue teams, barangay officials, healthcare workers, volunteers, and residents who participated in emergency evacuation procedures, water rescue demonstrations, and emergency medical response training. The activity aimed to improve coordination and response efficiency during severe weather disturbances and flooding incidents.
According to PDRRMO officials, the drill forms part of the province’s disaster risk reduction program focused on minimizing casualties and improving community preparedness during typhoons and heavy rainfall.
Emergency responders demonstrated the proper use of rescue equipment, early warning systems, and emergency communication procedures. Temporary evacuation centers were also activated during the exercise to familiarize residents with safety protocols and relief operations.
“Our goal is to ensure that communities understand what actions to take before, during, and after disasters,” a PDRRMO officer explained during the event.
The agency also distributed informational materials on flood safety, emergency hotlines, and disaster preparedness checklists to participating residents.
Local officials commended the cooperation of community members and emphasized the importance of regular preparedness activities in reducing disaster risks throughout the province.
PDRRMO Basilan continues to encourage residents to remain vigilant during the rainy season and actively participate in future disaster preparedness programs organized by local authorities.
